Dear Iowa Utilities Board Members Huser, Lozier, and Byrnes:

The Cherokee Chamber of Commerce dedicates itself to exploring opportunities that will strengthen the economic prosperity of Cherokee, Iowa. We recognize the importance of investing in and supporting industries that promote local employment, community betterment, and agriculture. In doing so, the Chamber has decided to support the alliance between the Little Sioux Com Processors ethanol plant and Summit Carbon Solutions in their venture to protect and grow the ethanol industry.

Little Sioux Corn Processors has chosen to modernize its plant and embrace the growing low-carbon fuel market. By joining forces with Summit Carbon Solutions, the plant will see a 30-point reduction in its carbon score, allowing them to sell ethanol at a premium in these markets. In tum, the plant has the potential to grow operations, maintain a strong end market for com, and sustain Iowa’s high land values – all of which are pivotal to the economic wellbeing of Cherokee.

This investment will allow Little Sioux Com Processors to remain a functioning plant that provides jobs and buys local corn, even as the world prioritizes many different types of energy. By working with Summit, Little Sioux will eventually have a low enough carbon score that their ethanol can compete with electric vehicles.

In addition to strengthening the ethanol industry, Cherokee County stands to receive over $2 million annually in property taxes from Summit Carbon Solutions. These added property taxes will help provide additional dollars for local schools, hospitals, road construction, and public safety.

The Cherokee Chamber of Commerce is pleased to support this partnership. On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors of the Chamber, we hope the Iowa Utilities Board will join us in supporting Little Sioux Corn Processors and Summit Carbon Solutions.

Sincerely,
