Environmental Permitting Specialist

Job Summary:

  • Manage and coordinate internal resources and outside consultants who provide permitting services in line with USACE and USFWS requirements, and state utility boards in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Ensure compliance with all other federal, state, and local requirements such as floodplain permitting and stormwater permitting and SWPPP/BMP requirements when necessary.
  • Contribute to the development, permitting, and compliance activities related to environmental planning documents. 
  • Maintains strong knowledge of applicable regulations, conducts regulatory assessments, and provides regulatory interpretations and guidance.
  • Communicate project and permitting specifics with the appropriate regulatory officials. Regulatory bodies include but not limited to USACE, USFWS, state utility boards, and state environmental agencies
  • Communicate with the overall project team, properly relay critical permitting details, understand constructability concerns, and needs and how permit constraints can affect construction and operation, and provide pertinent updates during project meetings.
  • Develops, reviews, and submits various environmental reports as required by permits and regulations.
  •  Coordinate with project team members, consultants, contractors, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to travel 30% in the Midwest
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resource management or related field
  • 5+ years’ experience in environmental permitting for large energy projects
  • Familiarity of pertinent regulations/programs including: CWA, ESA, USACE Nationwide Permitting Program, NHPA, and NEPA
  • Familiarity with best management practices for environmental protection
  • Familiarity with the route permitting processes through state utility boards in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota is beneficial
  • Knowledge of carbon programs and regulations a plus
