The Iowa Corn Growers Association set up a large display and informational area about corn production in Iowa last month at the Clay County Fair.  This became the backdrop for meeting up with O’Brien County corn producer and Iowa Corn Promotion Board President Kelly Nieuwenhuis.

Nieuwenhuis is also the past Siouxland Energy Cooperative (SEC) Board of Directors president. As one of 42 biorefineries in Iowa and located just west of Sioux Center, SEC is a large ethanol production facility that has nearly 400 member owners.

According to the Renewable Fuels Association, Iowa is the leading producer of ethanol in the U.S. with the fuel additive valued at more than $10.6 billion. About 4.7 billion gallons of ethanol is produced along with 11.5 million tons of dried distillers grain products valued at over $10 billion.
